Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have several old silver fillings which are beginning to look bad. What are my options?

A: Silver amalgam fillings, which are made of 50% mercury and 50% silver alloy, eventually need to be replaced. Your dentistcan tell you when they NEED to be replaced due to leakage, breakdown or recurrent decay. If your concern is strictly COSMETIC, there are many methods to replace the fillings with long lasting, attractive restorations. Such things as ceramic fillings, porcelain inlays, crowns and veneers may be used to give you the smile you’re looking for.

Q: My friend’s son just went to the dentist and they put sealants on his teeth. What are sealants?

A: Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay. Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs on these surfaces. Applying sealants is a quick, easy and painless process and can save time, money and discomfort sometimes associated with fillings. However, sealants are just one part of a child’s preventive dental care. Twice daily brushing, flossing, fluoride, wise food choices and regular dental care are all important parts of your child’s dental health.

Q: I’m missing several teeth. Do I need dentures?

A: Not necessarily. Dentures or a partial denture could be the solution, but we can also replace missing teeth with a crown or bridge, which are permanent restorations that are cemented onto the teeth and are referred to as “fixed” dentistry as opposed to a restoration of missing teeth with a removable appliance or partial denture.
